MOBILE THREATS

Did you know that third-party app stores host 99.9% of mobile malware? You may be keeping your computers safe with anti-virus software. But are you keeping your phone and tablet devices safe?

Helpful tips to stay safe:

  • Make sure your software is running on the latest version. Set your phones and tablets to “auto-update”. Read this article on how to set up auto-updates for your Apple apps and this article on how to set it up for your Android device.
  • Download apps from a verified trusted source. Cybercriminals create spoof apps to trick people into downloading malware onto their devices. Only download apps from trusted sources like Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
  • Password protect your phone and avoid storing sensitive information on it. Set up touch ID or facial recognition in order to access protected information on your device. Be sure to set up a backup with a unique pin or password as a second layer of security.
  • Be aware of using public WiFi. Always log on to a secure wireless network. If you find yourself using public wifi on a device while on the go, be aware of your activity and avoid doing things like banking or making a purchase.
  • Set up a remote wipe feature so you can delete all your information if your phone is stolen. Be sure you have a remote wipe enabled for your device so your personal data is automatically deleted if you lost or misplaced your device.
  • Do not just hand your phone to a stranger. If it’s unlocked, they can do some damage. Scam artists are getting smarter. They’ll pose as someone who needs help, might ask for your phone to make a call, and then quickly gain access to any personal information you have saved. Check out this article.
